The choice of gold leaf as a predominant medium, and the move away from figuration, overlapped in Sultana Maitec’s artistic biography: up to a point, the material itself imposed a certain stylistic discipline on the artist in shaping her compositions—beginning with the purification of forms, the stylization of drawing, the chromatic line, and the calibration of the proportion of gilded surfaces. Portraits gradually gave way to new bodies of work in which the focal point is invariably the oval, emptied of figurative content, with a perfectly cut contour through which the sun itself makes its entrance into the pictorial field.
